Fun and Cheap Activities in Albany, Auckland

Based in Albany, Highgrove Retirement Village is surrounded by the best of NZ’s natural and man-made attractions. Whether you are spending time with the grandkids, or are just looking for a fun afternoon out, these activities are perfect for all. 

Gills Scenic Reserve

Immerse yourself in some of the best New Zealand has to offer. Teeming with native trees and critters, this reserve is a little piece of nature in Albany. Gills Scenic Reserve is a ten-minute drive from Highgrove. With a waterfall, views overlooking Albany, and accessible walking paths, it is great for those with varying mobility levels. There are more difficult areas of the reserve for the more active or adventurous walker as well. 

Academy Cinemas

Academy Cinemas is the go-to place for all cinephiles. Although outside of Albany, it is an easy drive or bus ride into the city. The trip is worth it, Academy Cinema is no ordinary cinema. While yes, they show recently released movies, but also cult favourites, vintage films and indie productions. Glenfield Night Markets

While not technically in Albany, these Auckland wide Night Markets are guaranteed hits for the whole family. With hundreds of stalls, you can find anything from jewellery to churros. They operate in closed car parks in seven different Auckland locations. As they are undercover, these markets continue rain or shine and are a great opportunity to try different cuisines without breaking the bank. 

Event Cinemas

Down in Albany shopping centre is Event Cinemas Albany that brings you the biggest, best and most recent movies. Regardless if you are a movie buff, superhero fanatic, or an indie zealot, you are guaranteed to find a movie here. Check online for movie times and ticket prices. 

Plus, save on movie snacks by eating at Albany’s food court beforehand. With almost 30 establishments, there are various cuisines and options for all.

Hit the Beach

Did you know that there are 96 beaches in Auckland? Surrounded by sea, there is no better way to welcome the warmer weather than a trip to the beach. Around Albany, there are many great options, including Mairangi Bay, Browns Bay, Long Bay and Churchill Reserve. Before you head to the sandy paradise along our coasts, make sure to pack sunscreen, something to cover up with, and plenty of water. 

Silverdale Adventure Park

A little bit north of Albany is the fun-filled Silverdale Adventure Park. Perfect for all ages, this location has great food options, and plenty to do. Currently, there are eight different rides, as well as a play zone and cafe.
